Amalgam is the mercury metal alloy that has been used in the past and still today to fill cavities. With more modern tooth coloured alternatives allowing for a tooth-coloured filling that is strong and almost indistinguishable from your natural tooth, many people are wanting to get rid of their old fillings and replace them with new tooth coloured ones.
Be aware that under the current NHS regulations amalgam fillings are routinely still used on the biting surfaces of your back teeth.
